The unveiling of the first professionally filmed 4K 50fps video of PANTERA’s current lineup marks a significant moment for fans of the iconic metal band. Filmed during last year’s Resurrection Fest on June 29, 2023, in Viveiro, Lugo, Spain, the footage showcases the reunited PANTERA members Philip Anselmo (vocals) and Rex Brown (bass), alongside Zakk Wylde (guitar) and Charlie Benante (drums), performing beloved classics like “A New Level,” “This Love,” “Walk,” and “Cowboys From Hell” live on stage.
In a recent interview with Sweetwater, Rex Brown shed light on the decision to tour with this reformed version of PANTERA, a move that has garnered approval from the estates of PANTERA’s founders, drummer Vincent “Vinnie Paul” Abbott and guitarist “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott. Reflecting on the band’s legacy, Brown shared a poignant sentiment, stating, “When we were down recording with Charlie, I felt that same chill…I think they’re angels. And I think you know who they are. Those guys, I think they’re looking down, or they’re looking around us, with us, and I think they’re digging what they’re seeing, man.”
Discussing the opportunity to introduce PANTERA’s music to new generations, Brown expressed gratitude for the chance to witness the impact firsthand. “There’s a lot of memories in this band that are hard to put down…And losing the brothers, I just never in a million years thought that something like that would happen,” he remarked, adding, “It’s just amazing.”
Brown also touched on the unique dynamics of touring with PANTERA in 2024, emphasizing the camaraderie and dedication of the current lineup. “This is another band…At the same time, this has become a really tight unit,” he explained. Praising the contributions of Zakk Wylde, he noted, “Zakk just puts the extra… Dime was a very unique guitar player, and he was my best friend, and it’s good to see those boys up on the screens and with us.”
When asked about balancing the band’s legacy with new creative endeavors, Brown emphasized the importance of keeping PANTERA’s music alive for future generations. “This music needs to be heard again…It’s just wonderful to be able to do this and pay homage to my music, the riffs that I wrote, or the riffs that Dime wrote,” he affirmed.
Reflecting on the significance of performing PANTERA’s timeless songs, Brown acknowledged the enduring impact of the band’s music. “These were a big part of Philip and I’s songs too…That’s what this is about tonight, for me,” he stated, underscoring the profound connection between the band members and their audience.
Despite the absence of Vinnie Paul and Dimebag, Brown remains steadfast in his commitment to honoring their legacy through PANTERA’s music. “The show itself is a celebration of the lives of all four of us…We’re doing the best thing that we can to keep our music alive,” he affirmed, expressing confidence that their fallen bandmates are “smiling down and saying, ‘You guys are doing all right, man.’”
For Brown and the rest of the current PANTERA lineup, the journey of relaunching the band as a touring act has been marked by challenges and triumphs. From the initial decision to reunite to the rigorous rehearsals and preparation, the band members have navigated a path guided by their shared passion for music and a deep sense of camaraderie.
As PANTERA continues to captivate audiences worldwide with their electrifying performances, their enduring legacy serves as a testament to the enduring power of metal music and the indomitable spirit of brotherhood.
